19-year-old Manchester United talent could be involved in matchday squad vs Southampton

Callum Gribbin could be set for his Manchester United first team debut after being heavily involved in training ahead of the Reds’ clash against Southampton.

Jose Mourinho called up seven youngsters to first-team training before Saturday’s game at Old Trafford. However, the Manchester Evening News suggest the 19-year-old did more than his under-23s teammates.

Left-back Demi Mitchell was in action alongside fellow defenders Matt Olosunde and Ro-Shaun Williams while Zak Dearnley and Angel Gomes, who were both in the matchday squad for last season’s 2-0 Premier League win against Crystal Palace, were also used by Mourinho.

Under-23s striker Josh Bohui, who joined from Brentford a couple of summers, has been in good form and took part.

Gribbin, though, was heavily involved despite never making a matchday squad previously. He trained during pre-season under Louis van Gaal in 2015, as a 16-year-old, but has struggled with injuries since then.

The Englishman’s talent is clear to see for any watchers of Man United’s youth sides. His dribbling ability is hardly matched in United’s youth set-up, while his free-kicks have seen him go viral on a number of occasions.

He was out for three months at the start of this season, returning halfway through November. He’s been slowly brought back into Ricky Sbragia’s side, having fully cemented himself as one of the under-23s best players this season after occasionally earning a call-up from the under-18s for the past two seasons.

Mourinho has reportedly been considering promoting more youngsters into his side. It wouldn’t be surprising after the success of Scott McTominay, featuring regularly for United in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, often from the start, not just as a substitute.
