Romelu Lukaku has to forget media criticism and celebrate his goals, claims Manchester United legend

Romelu Lukaku must put any criticism at the back of his mind and play his own game, according to Manchester United great Dwight Yorke.

The Belgian signed for £75m from Everton and despite netting 15 goals already in a Man United shirt, Lukaku has been under fire for his performances.

Lukaku started in stunningly good form, scoring 11 goals in his first 10 games for the club, but a spell of poor goalscoring form followed. Jose Mourinho was keen to highlight Lukaku’s non-goalscoring contribution, which was correct, but a woeful showing in the Manchester derby where Lukaku was not just poor but a genuine detriment to the team saw the critics fly in.

Though he scored against both AFC Bournemouth and West Bromwich Albion in the week that followed, Lukaku celebrated neither goal. Yorke believes he should.

“He has scored 15 goals and the season is not even halfway yet,” Yorke enthused talkSPORT.

“That it is a good return for the money they spent.

“He has got the two goals in the last two games. That should give him a little bit more confidence.

“He has to enjoy what he is doing, take up the challenge, and forget what people say and write about him.

“You have got to be bigger than that. You are playing for the biggest football club in the country and he has to continue to go out and show what a quality player he is, because I’m a huge fan.”

No one quite knows why Lukaku showed a very muted celebration for his most recent two goals, having not done so for his first 13 in Red. Mourinho suggested it was because he scored against a former-club in West Brom, but given what United fans saw at Bournemouth, too, that seems unlikely.

Gary Neville has also waded in on the debate, claiming Lukaku has a duty to celebrate with the fans when he scores.
