Phil Neville has slammed Manchester United for a meek display against Bristol City in the League Cup.
Jose Mourinho’s men, following a truly languid first half, fell behind to a superb strike from Joe Bryan after 51 minutes.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic powered home a free-kick minutes later but Man United were sloppy in the final third and paid for it with an agonising late injury time winner.
And Neville, speaking on Sky Sports after the game, was quick to lay into his former side for failing to turn up at Ashton Gate.
“United weren’t at it – in the final third they were sloppy. Bristol City were positive from the first minute – the effort they put in, they deserved something from the game.”
Perhaps the most scathing indictment of that performance I can give is that, actually, conceding a 93rd minute winner to a Championship side was, on balance, the least painful option, such was the lethargy and sloppiness of United throughout the evening.
Watching another 90 minutes of the visitors pouting and throwing their hands in the air, bemused at the sight of a Bristol side with more thrust and desire giving them problems, would have been truly grim to say the least.
Say what you want about the nature of the defeat and what players could have done differently in a tactical sense: the attitude of almost everyone was gutless, entitled, and deserved to end up on the losing side.
