Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that Bristol City’s win over his side all came down to the luck they had.
The Championship side hosted the Red Devils in the League Cup and managed to secure an unlikely 2-1 win at home.
United were lacklustre in the first half with Bristol capitalising on the team’s apparent lack of interest in the match, even opening the scoring.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored from a free-kick to level things for his side but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback win.
Instead, Bristol scored in the last gasp of the match to shock Mourinho’s men and send them back to Old Trafford empty handed.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Jose said: “They were a bit lucky. But they fought a lot to be lucky. They fought like it was the game of their lives. It was a brilliant day for football. Congratulations to them.”
The Portuguese boss questioned his players attitude as well and was right in doing so after witnessing them play in a mediocre manner.
Manchester United had enough firepower to win the match with ease or at least it appeared so on paper.
Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba all started for the Red Devils with Jose Mourinho opting to rotate but keep the spine of his team strong.
Ultimately though it wasn’t strong enough and United were punished for their lack of clinical finishing.
Romelu Lukaku even came off the bench, helping his team begin to push for an equaliser but some fine goalkeeping from the opposition kept Mourinho’s men at arms length.
With United’s first available silverware off the table, Jose will be worried that the club’s season quickly unravels and will be aiming to put an end to their inconsistencies.
