David de Gea 7 – Perhaps not a game he would have expected to be hugely important in, but De Gea made a number of fantastic saves to keep Bournemouth out, frustrating Jermain Defoe.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Another solid game from the Manchester United vice-captain.
Phil Jones 7 – His first game for over a month, Jones was very solid in defence. He last started in the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea at the start of November. Dealt with pretty much everything Bournemouth could muster up.
Chris Smalling 6 – Jones showed Smalling up to an extent, but the latter wasn’t a liability. A decent performance from one of United’s more senior players.
Luke Shaw 6 – Proactive in defence on his second start this season, Shaw impressed again. His bursting runs forward are refreshing. Came off for Ashley Young after 82 minutes to a standing ovation from Old Trafford and a pat on the back from Jose Mourinho.
Nemanja Matic 6 – The Serbian has been ever present for United this season, and looked tired at times. McTominay’s energy helped to hide that. Looks far better next to Paul Pogba, as everyone does, when there is less responsibility on him to be the creative force.
Scott McTominay 7 – Continues to put in remarkably composed displays for a midfielder of his age. Will be learning quickly from playing alongside Matic. His fourth start for the club, and his eighth appearance. Some fantastic through balls, the pick of the bunch being a wonderful pass to Jesse Lingard for one of United’s best chances of the game, and a constant presence in the middle of the pitch.
Jesse Lingard 6 – After a sublime couple of weeks for Lingard, some of the best performances of his career, Lingard was less influential on Wednesday night, subbed off for Ander Herrera after 71 minutes. Missed a great chance to double United’s lead after a good ball from McTominay.
Juan Mata 6 – Frustrated fans on occasion by holding up United’s counter-attacks. But that’s how Mata plays, and what he is good at is what he showed, assisting for Lukaku’s goal with a wonderful dinked pass to the back post.
Anthony Martial 7 – Exciting as ever before being replaced by Marcus Rashford. An influence both on the left flank and centrally when he cuts inside, a trait seen more frequently than ever in Martial’s play these days.
Romelu Lukaku 7 – Criticised heavily for a dreadful performance in the Manchester derby, Lukaku responded with a goal, his ninth in the Premier League this season. Improved in the air from Sunday’s 2-1 defeat.
Substitutes
Marcus Rashford 7 – Came off the bench, replacing Anthony Martial to continue his record of appearing in every single Manchester United game this season (in all competitions). Hit the bar with a superb strike from outside the box.
Ander Herrera 6 – Did little after coming on for the final 20 minutes, though combined well on a few occasions with Juan Mata.
