Sergio Romero is open to a move away from Manchester United in January amid fears of losing his first choice place for Argentina ahead of the 2018 World Cup, according to reports.
The 30-year-old’s stock rose dramatically last season as Jose Mourinho used him as his first choice keeper during Man United’s successful Europa League campaign.
But the Portuguese has elected to use David de Gea in the Champions League this season and Romero, as a result, has only made four appearances in total.
And according to the Daily Mail‘s Joe Bernstein, the Argentine, who started in the 2014 World Cup final, fears that a lack of game time at Old Trafford this season will hamper his performances at next year’s World Cup and would be open to a move elsewhere over the January transfer window.
Romero will know full well that he cannot unseat De Gea but that in itself isn’t the problem here, but rather that he clearly feels very much on the periphery of proceedings in a way that wasn’t the case last season.
Mourinho placed his faith in him and reaped the rewards, with Romero claiming an impressive eight clean sheets on route to the final, and supporters will hope he receives the chance to feature as first choice in both domestic cup campaigns this term. Finding a second choice keeper of his calibre isn’t easy, after all.
