Gary Neville has predicted Manchester United to finish second in the Premier League this season with rivals Manchester City running away with the title at this stage.
The former-captain also outlined that finishing in second will certainly be progress for the Reds under Jose Mourinho, who took over in July 2016.
However, Neville insisted that second isn’t good enough for Man United. That means ever, but is particularly true given the £600m+ spent since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
“Second [place] would be progression,” Neville told Sky Sports at the weekend.
“I know that’s not good enough when you spend the money that’s been spent over the last four or five years at the club and [with] Jose Mourinho coming in to win the league.
“We shouldn’t say that it’s acceptable but at this moment in time I think it’s the best United can get. I think Jose would take it.”
The gap at the top of the table was extended to 11 points by Man City with a 2-1 win for Pep Guardiola’s side in the Manchester derby. Since then, both Manchester clubs have won their two games, meaning that gap is yet to be narrowed.
City are in stunningly good form, sitting unbeaten and on a 16-game winning run. United are doing well, and there has been clear progress, it seems it’s just a matter of City being too good. United, given the money spent, should be competing to a greater extent, though.
