Manchester United fans who may have been concerned ahead of the clash against Southampton have been given some hope in the form of history and statistics.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have run out of steam over the past two Premier League matches, embarrassingly losing to Sheffield United before disappointingly drawing with Arsenal.
United still remain relatively close to the top of the table but need to find their groove again if they hope to continue being called title challengers.
Solskjaer has insisted there’s no major panic but he will be the first to be disappointed with the results of late and of course the performances that went with it.
Southampton have proven themselves to be an impressive side this season and the Red Devils would do well to overcome them but history suggests they should be ok.
According to Sky Sports, Opta stated the following stat: Manchester United have come from behind to win 10 different Premier League games against Southampton, including a 3-2 victory in the reverse fixture at St Mary’s this season. No side has come from behind to beat another more often in the competition’s history (Man Utd also 10 vs Newcastle).
In that reverse fixture, Edinson Cavani came off the bench to score a brace in what was essentially the match that many fell in love with him.
Hopefully the Uruguayan can repeat the performance but perhaps as a starter instead and fans will want a more comfortable result this time around.
Manchester United’s home form has been horrendous so there are certainly nerves amongst the supporters but it should be a routine win, at least on paper.
