Manchester United reportedly opted not to sign Newcastle United star Sean Longstaff despite a lack of depth in the current squad.
The young Englishman was linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer but nothing came of it.
It was believed at the time the two clubs couldn’t see eye to eye over a fee but United failed to sign any other midfielder as well.
In fact, Daniel James was the only attacker signed as United made smart signings but perhaps not enough.
Longstaff’s brother, Matty, scored a cracker against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last weekend to hand his side a shock 1-0 win.
According to the BBC, Newcastle told the Red Devils Longstaff would cost £50m which Solskjaer’s side believed was too high and impractical given his lack of senior appearances at the time.
The reasoning is difficult to argue with but it begs the question of why no one else was signed if that was the case.
Surely there were more value-for-money players around or even £50m players who are actually worth the price-tag.
Manchester United’s lack of depth has shown this season but especially the midfield has shown a lack of quality as well.
It will be interesting to see who Solskjaer signs this January should he survive the current poor run of form.
