Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli is at the centre of an international tug-of-war between the Italian and the Brazilian national teams (via The Metro).
It’s fair to say that Arsenal new boy Gabriel Martinelli has had made a big impression in a short space of time.
The 18-year-old has scored 4 goals in 2 matches in the cup competitions this season and made a Premier League appearance on the weekend.
He is yet to make an appearance in international football, even at youth level. He was born and raised in Brazil but qualifies for Italy through his father.
Now, it looks as if the Gunners man at the centre of an international tug-of-war between the two countries with Italy head coach Roberto Mancini weighing in.
“As for Martinelli, it’s not so easy to apply to play for Italy,” Mancini said in an interview.
“We need to wait for players with two passports. In the meantime, we’ll continue to exchange [Ciro] Immobile with [Andrea] Belotti.”
If he does elect to play for Italy then Gabriel Martinelli will be following in the footsteps of other Brazilian-born players like Emerson Palmieri and Jorginho. He would perhaps get more game time with the Italian national team but the early signs suggest that Martinelli has an enormously high ceiling. There’s no reason why he won’t develop into becoming a potential star for the Brazil side.
