Former AS Monaco starlet Hannibal Mejbri has opened up on his decision to move to Manchester United following an elongated transfer.
The youngster’s arrival was overshadowed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side’s convincing 4-0 defeat of Chelsea.
Mejbri arrives as a highly rated prospect who is tipped to succeed on the highest level possible should he fulfil his potential.
The transfer is the continued work of United’s academy policy of strengthening their younger sides not just with local talent but also international talent.
The club’s backroom staff have had a reshuffle recently and it’s likely this kind of signing will become more common.
According to the Independent, Mejbri said: “It is an honour. Manchester United have a great history and are reputed for the way they develop young talent.
“It will allow me to progress to try to play one day with the biggest and the best. I have watched a lot of videos from the past.
“Huge names have worn the Manchester United shirt, it is an honour to come after them. Initially, I am going to join up with the Under-18s.
“If I am able to get into the first team in two years time, that would be great. Aside from that, everything depends on me.
“Physically, I am going to have to improve somewhat. I do not yet know how my body is going to evolve. If I have to turn my attention to that side of things, I will, but without losing my technical ability and my on-pitch vision.
“There is of course Pogba [who’s an inspiration]. In terms of the older ones, Ronaldo, Beckham and Cantona.
“When I went to Manchester, all that people would talk to me about was him. Over there, he is considered a king, whilst in France, he does not possess the same aura.”
Signing players at a younger age means Manchester United can avoid overspending in a currently inflated market.
Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James were all brought in this summer with the first two being signed for more than what the club would’ve liked to have spent.
Of course the trio have impressed so far but it still hurts United’s bank account nonetheless and so looking to the future is one way of saving money.
There’s no doubting Mejbri will be given the chance he’s hoping for, especially under Solskjaer’s management and so fans will be keeping a close eye on his development.
