Juan Mata has admitted that Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City feels like a defeat to the players.
Harry Maguire scored a 94th-minute for the Foxes as Man United threw away the game needlessly with shambolic defending in added time.
Huge, simple chances were also missed by Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and United’s wastefulness in possession at times was woeful. Manager Jose Mourinho described it as an easy game to win, and it was, with Leicester down to 10-men after Daniel Amartey’s sending off.
“We did the most difficult thing to score twice after they scored,” Mata told Sky Sports News.
“We win together, we draw or lose together and today feels like a defeat. We defend as a team and I will not speak about these things.
“It feels like a defeat. We should have killed the game somehow. We did OK but in the last moment we go back to Manchester very disappointed.”
Mata had a fantastic game. He scored either side of half-time to put United in front after the Reds had trailed to a Jamie Vardy goal, which was also a terrible display of defending from United’s defence and midfield.
The Spaniard finished well in the first half before a wonderful free-kick beat Kasper Schmeichel in the second. But his teammates failed to match his level, missing simple chances and committing mistakes to allow Leicester a point they shouldn’t have had the chance to have earned. United could have been leading by four or five goals by the time Maguire struck home.
