Paul Scholes reveals he tried to return to Manchester United this year, but club stopped him

Paul Scholes has revealed he applied to become Manchester United’s under-23s manager earlier this year, but was rejected.

Scottish Ricky Sbragia, who managed Man United’s reserves in his first spell at the cub back in the early-mid 2000s, replaced the departed Warren Joyce.

Scholes was linked with the role at the time, alongside Sbragia and ex-Chelsea under-23s boss Adi Vivesh.

The United great, who is still yet to land his first permanent coaching role, is currently a pundit on BT Sport, but spoke of his disappointment at not being able to return to his former-club in a new role.

“I don’t think the club were particularly interested,” Scholes told the Daily Mail.

“The only club I want to be at is Man United and I thought I had a good chance of doing the Under 23s

“That coaching role was something I really wanted to do but it didn’t happen.”

Many United fans will be disappointed to hear Scholes wasn’t chosen ahead of Sbragia.

However, in reality, Scholes hasn’t proved himself anywhere, whereas Sbragia has done excellent work at United previously and had success elsewhere since leaving in 2005.

Hopefully one day, the Englishman will be back at Old Trafford in some capacity, but it’s good, not bad, that the club doesn’t see great players like Scholes as having a divine right to jobs that others may be better for.

It’s why Ryan Giggs wasn’t chosen as first-team manager ahead of Jose Mourinho, because he has no experience. That’s how it should be. Treat legends and greats of the club well, but don’t offer them jobs just because of who they are and what they’ve done as players.
