Scott McTominay has been cited as one of the only non-‘childish’ Manchester United players by manager Jose Mourinho after he saw his side throw away a lead against Leicester City.
Juan Mata scored either side of half-time, including a scrumptious free-kick to beat Kasper Schmeichel, but Harry Maguire’s 94th-minute strike saw United drop points for the fourth time this season.
The Reds have been beaten by champions Chelsea and title favourites Manchester City, and drawn to Liverpool and Stoke City. They’re now 13 points behind local rivals Man City, who look set to wrap the title up well before the end of the season.
Mourinho labelled his players as “childish” for the way they missed chances an lost possession against Leicester, but singled out McTominay who didn’t even play, as an example of a player who didn’t make those mistakes.
“McTominay still has a lot to learn,” Mourinho started, before continuing to say, “he was a kid that last year was playing with kids, but no childish decisions at all.
“Some other guys have made childish decisions for many years.”
More than a piece of praise of McTominay, which, of course, it is in a way, it appears to be a great criticism of those who played against Leicester from Mourinho.
It’s him saying, ‘if this young midfielder can do it, why can’t you?’ to players like Ander Herrera who came off the bench and was hugely disappointing as he has been all season.
