Dayot Upamecano will not be leaving RB Leipzig in this transfer window despite the fact that he can leave for just £37.4 million in the summer.
Manchester United have been fans of the Frenchman for a long time, having come close to signing him when he was just 16 years of age.
Since then, he has gone on to become one of the world’s most coveted young centre backs and has attracted the attention of Europe’s elite.
His €42 million buyout clause becomes active at Leipzig in June and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims that clubs have made enquiries about his availability in this window, presumably with a view to capturing his transfer at a higher amount rather than joining the scramble for his signature later. One of those could almost certainly have been United as they look to bolster their options at centre-back.
But Leipzig have rejected the advances and are determined to keep him for the rest of the season even if it means getting less for him, Romano claims.
‘Several clubs have asked Leipzig whether a January deal would be possible,’ the expert said in The Guardian.
‘However, with Julian Nagelsmann’s team involved in the Bundesliga title race … and set to face Liverpool in the Champions League last 16 they are not considering selling their defensive linchpin halfway through the season.
‘Several Premier League clubs are interested, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, as are Bayern.
‘Leipzig are resigned to the 22-year-old leaving in the summer and have a shortlist of potential replacements, with Strasbourg’s Mohamed Simakan among the top targets.’
