Scott McTominay has tipped youngster Angel Gomes to be a “top class player” at Manchester United in the future.
The 17-year-old became the first player born in the 21st century to play in the Premier League after replacing Wayne Rooney against Crystal Palace – just days after becoming the youngest ever recipient of the ‘Jimmy Murphy Youth Player of the Year’ award.
He has continued to thrive for the Under 18s this season, playing a crucial role in their UEFA Youth League campaign with two goals and two assists in five games.
And McTominay, now an established figure in Jose Mourinho’s first team, noted that Gomes has what it takes to reach the highest level.
“Ultimately, it’s about working hard and listening to his coaches,” he said.
“He’s got a really good coach in Kieran, who pays really good attention to detail and that’s one of the most important things at that age when you’re learning – you can become such a better player, so that’s one of the main things for him.
“He just needs to be himself and, every game that he plays in, if he comes up with the Under-23s, to try to dominate those games. Hopefully, he can do that and kick on and become a really top class player.”
The 17-year-old put rumours of a potential move to Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund to bed by signing a new contract earlier this month, committing his long-term future and hopes of first team minutes in the future to the club that gave him his senior debut at the age of just 16.
And you can see why. McTominay is just the most recent of various examples of players from the club’s academy growing and thriving in the first team, with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard the most notable examples.
He certainly has the ability – the tools, so to speak – at his disposal to thrive, and will now need to match his natural zeal with application over the next couple of years.
