Manchester United are facing competition from AC Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to sign Ajax youngster David Neres, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho is on the lookout for an attacking midfielder capable of adding creative zeal to his side following Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s poor spell of form at No.10.
Neres, who moved to Ajax from Sao Paulo last year, has been an effervescent force on the right hand side of a front three this season, netting nine goals and claiming 12 assists in all competitions.
And according to the Mail Online‘s Layth Yousif, Man United will face stiff competition in their bid to sign the 20-year-old, who has been nicknamed the ‘Little Neymar’ by those watching him closely in Holland.
With news also emerging of a failed bid for Paulo Dybala, you get the sense that Mourinho is starting to place greater emphasis on procuring added creative talent in the final third to make up for Mkhitaryan’s anonymity at No.10 and match the power in that area boasted by the likes of Manchester City (Kevin De Bruyne, David and Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling), Chelsea (Eden Hazard), Liverpool (Philipe Coutinho) and Arsenal (Mesut Ozil).
And Neres – nimble, skilful, rapid across the ground, blessed with an eye for goal – seems like a player who fits that mould – somebody with a natural inclination towards creativity on the ball, a sense of not thinking and just playing.
Lots of names have been cast around, however, and the ‘Little Neymar’ is just one of them. Mourinho clearly wants somebody of his ilk, but who exactly remains a mystery.
