Pundit explains where Guardiola has done better than Mourinho

Manchester United are behind Manchester City in the Premier League this season due to Pep Guardiola managing to get the most of his squad according to Jamie Carragher.

With 20 games played, the Red Devils are currently 15 points behind their fierce rivals in a season when City have risen head and shoulders above their competition.

Both Manchester clubs started the campaign in fine form but it was Jose Mourinho’s men who lost their momentum after a while.

Mourinho has pointed to numerous factors as to why the Sky Blues are so far ahead of his side such as injuries sustained and money spent.

Carragher though believes that it simply comes down to who has extracted the most out of his players rather than money spent.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie said: “Pep Guardiola is the star for me of Manchester City.

“They had Fernandinho at centre-back [against Newcastle], and had Eliaquim Mangala, who previous managers don’t seem to have wanted, and Danilo playing at left-back when he isn’t really a left-back.

“Sometimes for how good City are you look at the names on paper and not everyone gets into an all-time XI.

“I know there’s been talk of Jose Mourinho saying he needs more money, but look at the improvement of two players under Guardiola.

“De Bruyne is now the best player in the Premier League and could go on to be one of the best in the world if he is not there already. His improvement has come under Guardiola.

“Raheem Sterling did not have a great start to his Manchester City career and was not a regular, but he is now one of the best wide players in the Premier League.

“Look at the improvements. It’s not just about spending money, every top club in world football spends money, that’s what you have to do.

“But the improvement in players he has inherited is why they are so far ahead of Manchester United.”

Jose arrived at United at the same time as Guardiola did at City and with how the season has went so far, some neutrals have used it as ammunition to claim that the Spaniard is a better manager.

Both coaches have a proven track record and it’s no surprise that two of the best clubs in England have gone after two of the best bosses in the world.

The rivalry between both managers also adds spice to a derby that is often fiercely contested and it was a derby that helped Pep open a huge gap over Manchester United.

At Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola experienced plenty of success, as for Jose Mourinho, his career covers Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and now United.

Both managers have been criticised for throwing money at their problems but whatever it is they did, it’s fair to say it worked.
