It’s tight at the top of the Premier League, and with only four points separating second from
seventh, Arsenal travel to Burnley on Sunday knowing a win is essential to any slim top-four
hopes they might have.
Turf Moor has been a difficult venue to take points from this term, and as Burnley sit seventh in
the Premier League—level on points with their impending north London foes—Arsenal face the
prospect of reviving a streak not witnessed since 2010 if they suffer defeat in Week 13.
A second-string Gunners side was unimpressive as they fell to Cologne 1-0 in the UEFA Europa
League on Thursday. And while that result was still enough to see them top Group H and head
through to the next round, Burnley will be smacking their lips after that display.
That’s due to the fact Sean Dyche’s men haven’t lost at Turf Moor since their first home match of
the campaign. Burnley have taken as many points at home this season as Tottenham Hotspur
(11), while Arsenal have triumphed only once outside the Emirates Stadium in league competition.
Arsene Wenger’s last away trip in the Premier League did not go to plan as leaders Manchester
City romped to a 3-1 win over his side at the Etihad. Since then, Arsenal re-established their north
London dominance with a derby win over Spurs, only to fall at the hands of Cologne in midweek.
As a result, Arsenal are at risk of losing three consecutive away games for the first time since April
2010. A 4-1 loss at Barcelona in the quarter-finals of that season’s Champions League caused a
ripple effect for Arsenal, who went on to lose their next three matches away from home, falling at
Tottenham, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers in a space of less than a month.
It’s a tough ask for the Premier League’s sixth-placed outfit to pinch a result at Turf Moor, too,
considering Burnley have conceded only two goals there this season, one of which came in their
sole home loss, when they fell 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion back in Week 2.
Dychee has also masterminded a three-win streak coming into this clash, and his team have kept
five clean sheets in their previous seven outings.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have kept one clean sheet in their six away league outings so far this
term, not to mention their haul of four points away from home puts them level with West Brom, as
well as promoted duo Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town.
Hardly the kind of company Wenger will be looking to keep.
Turf Moor has swiftly turned into a fortress in 2017-18, and Arsenal may be hard-pressed to avoid
matching that 2010 hoodoo of three away losses in succession following disappointments in
Manchester and Cologne.
