Manchester United have reached an agreement with Juventus over a swap deal involving Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku, according to reports.
Juventus are now favourites to sign Lukaku, with Inter Milan stalling in negotiations and the Serie A champions willing to include Dybala as a makeweight for the deal.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed yesterday that Dybala’s agent had travelled to England to hold talks with United regarding the possibility of a swap.
And according to the Independent‘s Kevin Palmer, the first hurdle has been cleared, with the two clubs striking an agreement over a deal thought to be in excess of £80m.
The next phase of any potential deal entails Dybala actually agreeing to move. He and his agent have emphasised for some time that, ideally, “La Joya” would remain at Juventus, where he is happy, but Juventus appear to have different ideas.
That new manager Maurizio Sarri wants another forward in the form of Lukaku – who would allow Cristiano Ronaldo to play the ‘Eden Hazard role’ of a second striker, roaming behind the Belgian – suggests that he may not view Dybala, a more classic attacking midfielder, as congruent with his ideals.
Juventus’ board, moreover, feel as if Dybala’s value would significantly drop with another poor season in Turin (he only scored five league goals last term) and believe Lukaku can easily score 20 goals in Serie A next season.
Therefore, while Dybala’s preference is to stay, it could become quite clear to him that Juventus would prefer him to move on. Under those circumstances, a move to Old Trafford is on.
