Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has put executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward on blast, claiming he understands nothing about football.
The Dutchman was in charge for two seasons before being sacked with Jose Mourinho then taking hold of the reigns.
In his first season Van Gaal steadied the ship at United after David Moyes’ turbulent time in charge.
His second season saw the club fail to qualify for the Champions League and so he was sacked despite winning the FA Cup.
The former Ajax man is still clearly bitter over what happened but has said just what all fans are thinking about Woodward.
According to the Daily Mail, Louis said: “At Bayern, the people in charge are football men. I always appreciated that.
“At Manchester United, on the other hand, Ed Woodward was installed as CEO — somebody with zero understanding of football who was previously an investment banker.
“It cannot be a good thing when a club is run solely from a commercially-driven perspective.”
Van Gaal’s comments are damning simply because they’re completely in line with what supporters feel about the club and Ed.
Fans thinking it is one thing but for an experienced, quality manager who has worked with the club to feel the same way is as big a wake-up call as the board will ever get.
Jose Mourinho has also slowly let it slip that his feelings are similar and that’s no surprise given the circumstances he was sacked in.
The Portuguese boss and Louis may not have been perfect managers but the pair have been with enough top quality clubs between them that they must know what they’re talking about.
