All the player ratings from Arsenal’s Europa League final with Chelsea in Baku.

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Chelsea v Arsenal
Stadium: Baku Olympic Stadium, Baku, Azerbaijan
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 29/05/2019
—–

It was a cagey start to the match in Baku. It was a big pitch and proceedings started at a crawl. Every player wanted a touch of the ball to calm things down and it took eight minutes to get the first chance.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles broke clear down the right flank after some good link-up play. His drilled front-post cross was flapped clear by Kepa in the Chelsea goal. The ball fell straight for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but his shot was scuffed wide.

Arsenal pressed forward after that. The Gunners created a couple of decent opportunities down the right flank. First, Sead Kolasinac broke clear before Alexandre Lacazette had a decent penalty shout turned down.

Olivier Giroud had a half chance at the other end before yet another Gunners opening. A Cesar Azpilicueta denied an inevitable goal before the ball rebounded to Granit Xhaka. The Swiss midfielder unleashed a ferocious strike from 30 yards which clipped the top of the crossbar and behind.

Despite Arsenal’s dominance, the first big chance of the match came at the other end. Chelsea’s full-back Emerson broke clear down the left but his shot was straight at Petr Cech in the Arsenal goal.

Cech was forced into another good save just moments later. Olivier Giroud found some space and while his strike was slightly scuffed, Cech did well to get across his goal and tip it past the post.

Halftime came and went and it was Chelsea who started the second 45 better. The Blues attacked from the off and found Emerson down the flank. The left wing-back had time to pick his cross and found Olivier Giroud who found space to power his header past Cech to score.

Arsenal needed a response but they couldn’t find one. Instead, Chelsea pushed forward and grabbed another. Ainsley Maitland-Niles lost the ball in his own half in what looked like a foul. The game played on and Pedro made it 2-0.

It was Maitland-Niles who was at fault again just moments later. The Englishman got the wrong side of Olivier Giroud and brought him down in the box. Eden Hazard stepped up to score with ease.

It was too late to make substitutions but Matteo Guendouzi and Alex Iwobi entered the fray. The Nigerian international got off to a fine start as he skipped past Andreas Christensen down the right. The ball came back to Iwobi from the resulting free kick and he fired the half-volley into the far corner of the net.

3-1 and Arsenal had hope. The atmosphere seemed to switch but that quickly changed. Hazard played a simple one-two with Giroud in the Arsenal box and made it 4-1.

That fourth goal killed the match as Arsenal squandered a number of late opportunities.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Petr Cech – 6

A sad end to his Arsenal career. Petr Cech didn’t make any clear errors and made a string of good saves.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 3

It’s a shame for Ainsley Maitland-Niles. He was Arsenal’s best player in the first half but amongst their worst after the break. He seemed to lose his head after the first goal went in and never recovered.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 3

He was poor. Sokratis started well but should’ve done a lot better for some of Chelsea’s goals. He was slow for the second and lost his man for the fourth goals.

Laurent Koscielny – 3

It was far from his best performance. Laurent Koscielny lost his man for the opening goal and Arsenal didn’t really recover after it.

Nacho Monreal – 4

Hard to blame him for anything. Nacho Monreal was fine.

Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (66′) – 3

He was poor after coming off the bench. Matteo Guendouzi was overly aggressive and a yard off the pace.

Sead Kolasinac – 2

Such a frustrating evening from him. Sead Kolasinac had a number of golden opportunities in the first half but his final ball was woeful. He struggled defensively throughout but was exposed after halftime.

Lucas Torreira – 4

It’s hard to blame too much of this on Lucas Torreira. The Uruguayan midfielder had a good first half defensively.

Sub: Alex Iwobi (66′) – 7.5

An excellent cameo from Alex Iwobi. The Nigerian international did more in 25 minutes than any Arsenal attacker did in 90. He was lively, positive, and full of purpose.

Granit Xhaka – 4

He wasn’t the worst player in red tonight. Granit Xhaka hardly shone but he won’t be pleased with his evening.

Mesut Ozil – 3

Such a disappointment. Mesut Ozil actually put a good first-half performance in defensively. The German covered Jorginho well for the most part but he struggled as it went on. Ozil was non-existent in attack throughout.

Sub: Joe Willock (78′) – 6

Joe Willock impressed in his brief cameo. He should have scored at least once but he can be pleased enough individually.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 2

It was an infuriating performance from Arsenal’s top goalscorer. He couldn’t hit a barn door in front of goal with no shortage of opportunities.

Alexandre Lacazette – 4

The Frenchman was slightly better than his strike partner but it was a low bar. The Frenchman won’t be happy with his performance on the night.
