Player ratings: Poor Man United scrape lucky win over West Ham

David de Gea 5 – Made a huge save with the score at 1-1 but his poor distribution, which led to West Ham scoring, is a concern.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Gave a decent account of himself, driving with the ball whenever he could. Tidier with the ball than most but could have been more decisive.

Phil Jones 5 – Quite a chaotic display from the Englishman. Failed to stay tight to West Ham players in the final third.

Chris Smalling 6 – More composed than his defensive partner. Used the ball intelligently, even supplying a good through-ball for Marcus Rashford.

Marcos Rojo 5 – Amazing to think the club gave Rojo a new contract. Looked well off the pace at left-back; his positioning for Felipe Anderson’s goal was all over the place.

Fred 7 – Another strong display from the Brazilian. Broke up play nicely and shifted the ball forward with zip. Has to play in Barcelona.

Paul Pogba 6 – Performed reasonably well in the first half, scoring a good penalty, but increasingly spent too much time dwelling on the ball. Somewhat redeemed himself by showing excellent bottle to score another penalty in the second period.

Juan Mata 5- Won a penalty but looked so meek in the middle, unable to win challenges or feed the ball through to attacking players. Subbed off soon after West Ham equalised.

Jesse Lingard 4 – Effectively non-existent. Has not looked the same since encountering a succession of injuries.

Anthony Martial 4 – Similar story to Lingard. Far too slow in possession, sloppy with his passing. You struggle to see why he did not take on Pablo Zabaleta with his pace.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Certainly applied himself and found some good areas, but his execution – especially with crosses – was awful.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford 6 – Came on and somewhat turned the tide of momentum back in United’s favour. Missed a big chance from close range.
