Maurizio Sarri doesn’t rate Olivier Giroud as a “top-level player”, according to Jamie Redknapp.
The striker has endured a frustrating season at Chelsea, with rumours linking him with a move away from the club.
Both Giroud and Alvaro Morata has earned criticism for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.
The Frenchman has always been a divisive player, including during his Arsenal days, but there is a feeling that his contribution can be undervalued.
Returning to the Chelsea side on Thursday night, Giroud played his part in the Blues overcoming Tottenham to reach the EFL Cup final.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp praised the qualities Giroud possesses, claiming Sarri must simply not rate him as a footballer:
He [Hazard] likes to pop it into people and then get the next ball. He likes to bounce it in, play little one-twos round the corner.
He [Giroud] holds the ball up extremely well, he’s a presence, he’ll get you goals.
It’s obvious Sarri doesn’t think he’s a top-level player because he would be playing him more often.
Giroud could still potentially leave Chelsea in the final days of the January transfer window, but it feels unlikely.
Morata is off to Atletico Madrid, following the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, so selling the 32-year-old as well would be a risk.
