Player ratings: Solskjaer wins at Wembley, De Gea and Pogba world class

David de Gea 9 – A genuine masterclass. Made save after save in the second half as Tottenham streamed forward, using his feet like some goalkeeping wizard. Truly the best in the world, and by some distance.

Ashley Young 7 – Strong captain’s performance. Played a very important role controlling the position of Man United’s back four and battled hard against Heung-Min Son.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Another classy, controlled defensive display from the Swede. Positioned himself so well up against Harry Kane. Looks more and more comfortable in a Manchester United shirt.

Phil Jones 6 – Slightly chaotic. Very physical in the box but found himself out of position too often and gave supporters jitters when he had the ball.

Luke Shaw 6 – Nicely disciplined throughout, using the ball quickly and looking forwards, but could have helped out Martial a bit more.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Once again quietly assured in defensive midfield. Neat and tidy on the ball, although often outpaced by the likes of Dele Alli through the middle.

Ander Herrera 7 – Such a high-energy performance from start to finish. Tore across the pitch in a calculated fervour, winning possession and moving play forward with precision.

Paul Pogba 8 – Without doubt the most influential player on the pitch. Drove through the middle at will, combining his unique power and skill to dominate for large parts of the game. His assist for Rashford was nothing short of sublime and he could have scored in the second half. The Frenchman is loving life after Jose Mourinho.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Played a hugely important role as a False 9, causing confusion among Tottenham’s centre backs and preventing Harry Winks from passing into midfield. Buzzed around to create space on the counter superbly, demonstrating just how important he is to this new set-up under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Anthony Martial 6 – Looked extremely dangerous in the first half, tearing into the box on several occasions, but lost momentum after half time.

Marcus Rashford 7 – The youngster’s confidence keeps growing under Solskjaer. Scored another wonderful goal, taking down Pogba’s pass and hitting the ball across Hugo Lloris, and made his presence felt down the middle with his old-school aggression and raw energy.
