Manchester United have reportedly had a huge £80m bid for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly rejected as Jose Mourinho ramps up his efforts to shore up his defensive line.
The Portuguese manager has been terribly let down by his back four so far this season with the club currently sitting in eight place in the Premier League table.
Mourinho was desperate to sign a centre-back last summer but his plans were not taken seriously by the board and he was left empty handed.
Toby Alderweireld was the main target but it’s understood the younger Koulibaly is now seen as a more ideal transfer if the club are to blow a chunk of money on anyone.
United have signed Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof under Jose’s management but it appears he’s still keen on adding a more experienced and proven defender.
According to Metro, La Repubblica report that the Red Devils £80m offer was quickly rejected by Napoli as they’re looking for upwards of £89m next summer instead.
It’s unlikely executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would be willing to offer any more than already offered so Mourinho may have to look elsewhere.
Having gone through a list of targets over the summer, it’s difficult to imagine the former Chelsea boss will be given what he wants this time around either.
