Jose Mourinho has been accused of trying to get himself sacked at Manchester United by ex-Reds defender Rio Ferdinand.
The Portuguese has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks. After Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with struggling La Liga side Valencia in the UEFA Champions League, Man United haven’t won in four games.
It’s been almost two months since they won at Old Trafford and every game has been drab and dull. A small selection of fans booed United off the pitch against Valencia.
Ferdinand told BT Sport during the television channel’s coverage of the game that he expects Mourinho is trying to get himself sacked by the club.
“I think you ask Jose Mourinho if he wants to stick with the job,” Ferdinand said.
“I get the feeling he’s asking for it [the sack].”
It’s an extraordinary claim. Perhaps Ferdinand really meant that Mourinho is asking for the sack through his comments in the media and tactics with his team.
Mourinho played young midfielder Scott McTominay in a three-man defence, ahead of Eric Bailly, in Saturday’s 3-1 humiliating loss to West Ham United. Some considered that as a sign to the United board that they should have financed Mourinho’s wishes to sign a centre-back in the summer.
Reports suggested that Mourinho wanted to bring in either Harry Maguire of Leicester City or Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld. Performances so far this season have proved Mourinho right.
