Jose Mourinho is preparing to end a long-standing Manchester United tradition in Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League match against Juventus.
The Portuguese coach has decided to stop the Man United squad from staying at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester before home games.
Such a tradition has been in place for many years, having been implemented by Sir Alex Ferguson. Louis van Gaal and David Moyes also stuck by it.
However, Mourinho was reportedly “furious” at the fact that his United side arrived late to a recent Champions League group stage game against La Liga side Valencia CF and wants to avoid a repeat of the situation.
The Reds host Italian champions Juventus on Tuesday night and after being fined £13,000 for their late arrival against Valencia, which led to a delayed kick-off, Mourinho has made changes.
It was an embarrassing situation as United turned up late to their own stadium. Traffic congestion caused the issue, but now Mourinho has demanded a hotel closer to United’s Old Trafford stadium.
Perhaps an easier change would have been leaving earlier. Simultaneously, though, if there is any uproar about the change, it would be ridiculous. It’s only a hotel after all, and perhaps the change will be good for the Reds. It’s amateur to turn up late to your own home game.
