Roberto Carlos has insisted that Manchester United would be “very lucky” if they were to have Zinedine Zidane as manager to replace under-fire Jose Mourinho.
The club’s current boss Mourinho has been under huge pressure in recent weeks after guiding Man United to one of their worst ever starts to a Premier League season.
Mourinho’s Reds lost three of their opening seven fixtures in the league, a record so bad that’s its only match in the last two decades is David Moyes’ woeful team.
Zidane has been tipped as one of the favourites to replace Mourinho, although recent comments from his representatives have made him being named as Mourinho’s successor seem unlikely.
Roberto Carlos, though, hailed his former team-mate, who led Real Madrid to glory in the UEFA Champions League on three consecutive occasions.
“It is very difficult for a coach to leave the team at this moment [Mourinho],” Roberto Carlos told Spanish newspaper AS.
“But in any case, Zinedine Zidane is a great coach and any team he will go to will be very lucky.”
Mourinho gave himself a lifeline with United’s recent 3-2 win against Newcastle United. The Portuguese saw his players score thrice in the final 26 minutes to secure an epic comeback against Rafa Benitez’s side.
Zidane joining United seems almost impossible after his agent claimed he doesn’t want to manage in England. And why he’d want to come to a struggling United over other possible clubs is a mystery.
