It’s no surprise to see sections of Manchester United fans struggle with the club’s reported interest in Harry Maguire as the fees stated are simply sensational.
Many would’ve been happy to sign the Englishman but the mood sours when it’s claimed Leicester City wants around £90m for their key player.
It’s certainly a fee that would reduce Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s budget tremendously and given how United still need another central-midfielder at the very least, it may not be the smartest move.
As such it would make more sense for the Norwegian to turn his attentions to other cheaper alternatives.
Solskjaer had previously stated his transfer policy would be one that involves signing young, upcoming British talent and so far fans have seen that in Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
However, there aren’t any real, young British centre-backs that the former Molde man can sign with Liverpool unlikely to sell Joe Gomez and West Ham’s Declan Rice tied down for quite some time.
This means Ole will have to look elsewhere but there are plenty of young talent available.
One such option is RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano who is arguably the most difficult to bring of our proposed three targets.
The Frenchman undoubtedly is one of the prospects of the future and he featured in a little less than half his side’s Bundesliga matches, meaning he may be up for the grabs.
The only speed bump in such a transfer is how the German club have managed to qualify for the Champions League though Manchester United can overcome that problem by offering a tempting wage package.
Benfica’s Ruben Dias may be a little pricey but some reports put his release clause at around €66m, meaning he’s still cheaper than Maguire and can improve tremendously despite already having decent experience.
United were heavily linked with Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic in the past and the Serie A side almost fell to relegation last season, making it far easier to sign him now.
The young Serbian would probably be the easiest transfer to wrap up as Solskjaer could offer him handsome wages, Europa League football and the opportunity to be a part of something big at Old Trafford.
All three signings are certainly doable and they should be cheaper to sign than Maguire who United may end signing for the world record fee for a defender.
