Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku for his static performance against Valencia in a 0-0 draw in the UEFA Champions League.
The former-Man United defender claimed that Lukaku has become a defender’s “dream” because he moves so little across the frontline, making him easy to mark.
Lukaku looks predictable, uninventive and completely unthreatening in a United shirt at the moment. He was compared to a mannequin and a statue by fans on Tuesday night.
“He’s easy to mark at the moment because he just stands still. He’s got to be moving,” Ferdinand told BT Sport after the game.
“Make defenders think. At the moment defenders are seeing exactly what he’s doing. For defenders, he’s a dream.”
The Belgian had a good World Cup campaign with his country, despite missing a number of chances. His hold-up play was impressive and his goal rate at the start of this season was okay.
Yet now, Lukaku was looks bereft of confidence and motivation. Paul Pogba was seen shouting at his close friend to do something different to what he was doing on Tuesday.
Marcus Rashford is putting in more effort and looking more exciting than Lukaku. The young English forward hit the crossbar on Tuesday and offers far more penetration than Lukaku. Jose Mourinho should start Rashford up front and drop Lukaku. No United player can feel too safe in their role, as it leads to complacency.
