Jose Mourinho has claimed Manchester United’s second placed finish was phenomenal, suggesting they over-performed in the last Premier League season.
Though some fans were satisfied with the result in the last campaign, some also pointed to the 19 point gap to eventual winners Manchester City as cause for concern.
Despite the huge difference in numbers, Mourinho insists his team over-achieved in their efforts in a year that was actually quite frustrating.
Against the top six sides United grabbed admirable results but they faltered against teams who were considerably weaker.
Had they performed better in those matches then perhaps they would’ve put together a more ambitious title challenge.
Mourinho: “Some improvements in our performance. I accept the result as a fair result. I told last season to finish second was phenomenal and I don’t say more than that. The players they tried, they raised the level of their effort and intensity.” #mufc [BT]

This season it doesn’t appear as though the Red Devils will put together any European football challenge let alone a title challenge.
Mourinho’s men are currently with 10 points out of a possible 21 after a poor start to the season.
The Champions League could’ve offered a positive distraction for supporters but instead Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw against Valencia at home.
The pressure is now piled onto the club and Jose even further as they extended their winless run to four games.
United’s upcoming fixtures are even more difficult compared to the ones they’ve faced so far and things could quickly get ugly.
