Jamie Redknapp has suggested that both manager Jose Mourinho and midfielder Paul Pogba could leave Manchester United amid a recent spat between the two.
The pair are both ‘stars’ in world football, but neither have lived up to expectations since arriving at Old Trafford at similar times in the summer of 2016.
Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal after a torrid spell under the Dutchman, and bought Pogba from Juventus for £89 million, a then world record-fee.
Pogba’s performances have been inconsistent and low on quality too often. Mourinho had a good first season with two trophies, but has since failed to deliver on silverware or style of play and isn’t getting the best out of his players, including the ones that he has signed, like Pogba.
At the weekend, Pogba told reporters that United should attack more than they do under Mourinho.
“It’s not helpful. It’s a loaded answer,“ Redknapp said, speaking on Sky Sports.
“I get it, I do get it and I’m sure it’s something the players talk about in the dressing room.
“But I don’t think it helps. Don’t say it to the press, say it to the manager.
“I don’t think they will both be here next year – maybe neither!”
It’s quite possible that Mourinho could be sacked and Pogba could leave. The Mail report that Pogba has told both Mourinho and United’s transfer chief Ed Woodward that he wants to leave the club, having flirted intermittently with FC Barcelona in the summer.
“I don’t think they are getting the best out of Pogba but he has to do more himself,” Redknapp continued.
“Modern players need to look in the mirror but the manager has to take responsibility. Jurgen Klopp gets the best out of his players, Pep Guardiola gets the best from his players, but there is a lot of wasted talent here.”
