Bryan Robson has defended Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and claims the midfielder is given unfair criticism.
Pogba has become somewhat a scapegoat at Old Trafford having not lived up to high expectations that were made of him when the Frenchman arrived for £89m in the summer of 2016 from Juventus.
Although Pogba has been one of Man United’s most important players in the last three season, that is despite him underperforming. United fans rightly expect more from a player of his quality.
However, former-United captain Robson believes criticism of Pogba has been excessive and he is being blamed for the team’s failures a whole.
“He’s a top player, but I think Paul comes in for a bit of unfair criticism,” Robson explained.
“Every time United have a bad result, it’s always him who gets the flak.
“But it’s a team game and it’s up to everybody to pull together.
“When people were talking about Brighton and his performance down there, there were a lot of players in the United team who were worse than him on the day.
“Yet because of his stature, he’s the one who takes the most criticism. He’s an outstanding player, he just needs that little bit more consistency in terms of his performances.”
Pogba certainly needs to be more consistent. His display in the opening Premier League fixture of the season against Leicester City was assured and powerful, with the captaincy given to him, too. However, at Brighton, he was one of many who were off-colour and the same was true against Tottenham Hotspur.
Robson, though, is right. Like Pogba, he too was criticised at the start of his United career having signed for a big fee and taken some time to settle in. He knows what it’s like to be the man under pressure in the middle of the park.
Pogba needs to do more, but he’s not the biggest problem at United, that’s a team-wide issue.
“For me he’s got a good attitude towards the game,” Robson continued. “He’s got the ability, it’s just about getting it out of him week-in, week-out, if you want to go on and win the title.”
