Manchester United were significantly interested in Atletico Madrid left-back Lucas Hernandez during the summer transfer window, reports France Football.
The French outlet also states that Man United will not have completely stopped their interest despite Hernandez’s large release clause of around £72m.
The performances of Luke Shaw for Jose Mourinho at the start of this season have led to the Englishman being named the club’s August Player of the Month and a recall into the England squad. Thus, a move for Hernandez may not be as likely as it was in the summer.
However, Hernandez is a player of significant quality and his reputation only continues to grow after 90 appearances in all competitions for Atleti already and 12 for his country, including during this summer’s glorious World Cup campaign for Les Blues.
France Football report that Real Madrid are the main suitors for Hernandez, having already signed his brother, Theo, from Atleti in a controversial move.
Lucas Hernandez signed a new contract in the summer with Atleti acknowledging the interest of Europe’s top clubs. His release clause was increased to around £72m but that supposedly did not put off Real Madrid nor United.
Now, they suggest that Hernandez could be given a fourth contract extension at the Wanda Metropolitano since 2016 with interest not dying down.
United seem unlikely to make a January move and potentially won’t sign a new left-back for some years if Luke Shaw can find some consistency in good form over the course of the season. However, it’s an interesting additional possible target to a list that grew over the summer to include Juventus’ Alex Sandro and Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose.
