Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has spoken on talk of veteran defender Gary Cahill leaving the club in January.
The former Bolton Wanderers man became a mainstay for the Blues after his switch from the then-named Reebok Stadium in January 2012, but has so far this season struggled to break into Sarri’s starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.
Previously, the Italian coach had chalked Cahill’s omission up to his late return from the World Cup, having restricted the 32-year old from joining the club for their pre-season campaign.
However, now back in the Chelsea squad, and amid talk of a surprise switch to Manchester United once the January window opens, Sarri has weighed in on Cahill’s options moving forward.
Speaking in his press conference, Sarri said:
I’ve spoken with him. There’s October, November and December, so I think he has to wait.
I was very happy with the performance of Cahill [against Liverpool].
And so now Gary for me is very useful. January is far from now, so we will see.
We’ve still October, November and December.
Cahill is expected to be named on the bench on Saturday with Antonio Rüdiger back available, when Chelsea will play Liverpool for the second time in three days.
However, Sarri claims this is more so because Cahill can’t yet be expected to compete in two full 90-minute games so close together. The Italian continued:
I was very happy with their performance. Fabregas and Cahill played 90 minutes after a long time, so I’m not sure if they’re ready to play twice in a week for 90 minutes.
After Wednesday I am sure they will be very useful for us over the season.
