Manchester United could appoint RB Leipzig’s Paul Mitchell as the club’s first ever technical director.
Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward has been looking at a number of candidates to step into the new role at Old Trafford.
Mitchell is one of many names but comes with a great reputation. At Leipzig now, Mitchell was previously at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
German outlet Bild suggests that Mitchell “tops Manchester United’s list” to become technical director. The 37-year-old only joined Leipzig in February 2018, but manager Ralf Rangnick was disappointed with the failure of the club to complete deals for Everton’s Ademola Lookman and Sebastian Rudy during the summer and Mitchell could, therefore, be on his way.
Rangnick was surprised to find Leipzig did not identify and sign an alternative to Lookman after failing to secure the Englishman’s signature.
Mitchell was born in Manchester and would likely be interested in the role. Other names mentioned are more high-profile in the world of European football and more experienced.
Juventus’ Fabio Paratici has been said to be top of United’s list by Italian outlets. He is the man who masterminded this summer’s signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid and the free transfers of Emre Can and Leonardo Bonucci.
Spanish newspapers have suggested that it is instead Andrea Berta of Atletico Madrid who would be United’s first choice.
United are right to be looking for a technical director, and it’s good to have so many big names linked. The Reds need to shake-up their transfer strategy, which has been clouded by short-term thinking in the last few years.
