Manchester United midfielder Fred has insisted that the Reds must improve on their mental strength after a period of poor results.
Fred scored his first goal for Man United last weekend in the Premier League, netting an early opening goal for his side in what finished as a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
However, after drawing a game that they should have won against Wolves, United then fell to Championship side Derby County in the League Cup Third Round, losing on penalties after a torrid showing.
The Brazilian signed for United in the summer for £52 million from Ukranian team Shakhtar Donetsk but hasn’t started in the most amazing fashion.
“Nobody wants to lose,” Fred told the club’s official website, ManUtd.com.
“We want to win always and when we lose it is very sad, but we cannot let this beat us down. We need to put our heads up, train harder so we do not let this happen again.
“It’s a lesson to learn. We need to learn and to keep this feeling in our minds so we can be stronger for the next game.
“We are ready (for West Ham). Every game in the Premier League is a fight, is a hard game and against West Ham it won’t be different. It’s a great team that have new players for this season.
“They are strong but we are Manchester United and we won’t let our heads go down against any team. We need to be strong mentally and tactically.
Fred is not the first player or coach to speak about mental strength at United. Manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that his side is not mentally strong enough, while Fred’s midfielder teammate Paul Pogba has referred to it, too.
It’s clearly an issue, therefore.
