Leicester City and England defender Harry Maguire, who Manchester United pursued in the summer, has signed a new five year contract at the King Power Stadium, the club has confirmed.
The 25-year-old was voted Leicester’s best player last season and shined in a back three for England during their journey to the World Cup semi-final this summer.
Jose Mourinho, hellbent on signing a central defender, pursued him over the transfer window but Leicester made it clear they were unwilling to sell him.
And the club has confirmed today that Maguire, having joined the Foxes in 2017, had committed his long term future to Claude Puel’s side.
United turned to Maguire after failing to strike a mutual agreement with Tottenham Hotspur over a fee for Toby Alderweireld, their number one target in that position, but had even less luck with England international.
Leicester have a strong record of managing to keep their best players and Maguire, who respected their decision not to sell him in the summer, has explained his decision to sign on the dotted line despite receiving interest from elsewhere.
“They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League and built a great platform for me to go and perform at the World Cup,” he said.
“I owe them a lot and I’m looking forward to the future.”
