Manchester United have endured a poor start to the 2018-19 season but manager Jose Mourinho has receives surprising backing from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Two defeats in the opening three games has unsurprisingly triggered plenty of criticism towards both Man United and Mourinho, but the leader of the Premier League champions has defended the club’s early form.
Speaking to the media before Man City’s narrow 2-1 win over Newcastle United, Guardiola explained how football managers are judged on results and how United “remain a top team.”
He said: “They (Man United) remain a great, a top team. We’re in August. There are a lot of points to play for and the real season starts after the international break.
“With three games every week, the travelling and no time to prepare for the games. Unfortunately, it’s our job (the criticism). Our job depends on results. When we win we are good, when we don’t we are not good.
United aim to avoid three consecutive Premier League defeats when they travel to Burnley on Sunday afternoon and now find themselves seven points behind City and nine points behind Liverpool and Chelsea in the title race.
Hopefully something within the squad will click sooner rather than later.
