Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United are set to finish outside of the top four in the Premier League after poor early season form.
The former-Liverpool defender explained that dropping points against teams like Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as Man United have done, is fatal for a team.
Even though it’s only two games, Jose Mourinho’s side have dropped five possible points from it, and now sit dangerously far behind front-runners Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
Over the course of the season, that will spell trouble for United, Carragher suggested.
“On the evidence of what we’ve seen I’d say Arsenal or Manchester United, from what we’ve seen in these opening six games,” Carragher responded when asked who would drop out of the top four.
“I think the top six are so far ahead now that if just one or two of them teams on any given weekend drop points it feels like a really big thing for the rest of the other teams because a lot of the other dropped points come from each other.
“So far Liverpool winning, City winning, for Tottenham and Arsenal, for Chelsea and United to drop points against two of the lesser sides it’s a really big thing.
“City showed last year – and whoever is going to win the title this year – that the points total now to win the title – it was 80 or so when I was playing – but it’s 90 plus now.”
United have been far from good enough thus far. A title race was considered as necessary. This is Mourinho’s third season in charge and he’s had a number of transfer windows, signing players in almost every single one.
Progress from his first season seems limited and when he arrived a title challenge was expected in his second or at least third season in charge. That’s not going to happen. And now people are questioning whether United can make the top four.
