Eden Hazard has confirmed speculation of his desire to leave Chelsea for a “dream” move to Spain during the last summer transfer window but he insists that he remains happy at Stamford Bridge.
It was a fairly successful summer for Hazard – netting the winning goal in the FA Cup Final against Manchester United and helping Belgium to third place at the World Cup in Russia – which made high-profile interest almost inevitable.
Ahead of Chelsea’s second clash against Liverpool in the space of four days, the electric winger sat down with BT Sport for an honest interview.
I will tell you the truth. After the World Cup I wanted to leave because my dream is to play in Spain. Then I spoke to the board and the manager and I said “I can stay no problem.” The new manager has come in and we are enjoying playing with him and I’m happy I stayed. I’ve got three years on my contract left.
Yes [I can spend the rest of my career at Chelsea] for sure, but also the possibility is that I can leave also. I love the club, the fans, the city and my team-mates, I think, love me so it’s easy to stay. But if I leave or if I stay I will be happy. This club is now part of my life so we will see.
After netting terrific goals in both meetings with Liverpool this week, the 27-year-old is widely considered to be one of the most in-form players in Europe and will be a key component to Sarri’s side if they are to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
You wouldn’t be mad to put money on Hazard departing West London at the end of the current campaign, but there’s no doubt he’ll continue to perform for Chelsea until that time comes.
