David de Gea wants a wage packet on par with Manchester United’s top earners if he is to sign a new contract with the club, according to reports.
The Spaniard has been voted the club’s best player for four out of five seasons and won the Premier League ‘Golden Glove’ award in May.
Man United have the option to extend De Gea’s contract by another year in the summer but are obviously keen to tie him down on a long-term basis.
And according to the Evening Standard‘s James Robson, the keeper, currently receiving just under £200,000-a-year, wants to be earning the same amount as Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez – who both make over £300,000-a-week – should he commit to United on a long-term basis.
De Gea, who arrived at the club in 2011, has more capital in the bank than Sanchez or Pogba put together in terms of service to the club, and is arguably more important than the pair.
His demand for a considerable improvement on his salary, therefore, makes sense – especially at a time when both Chelsea and Liverpool have splashed out north of £60m on new keepers.
Speaking in relative terms, De Gea is absolutely due a £350,000-a-week salary.
