Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has revealed who he believes should be at the helm, backing Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola over current manager Jose Mourinho.
Many had believed the Spaniard was being lined up for the job several years ago after he was spotted with Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, nothing came of that meeting and he ended up at fierce rivals City instead later on down the line.
Guardiola won the title for his club last season while Mourinho now faces increasing pressure over United’s poor start.
Cantona believes there’s still time to make amends but reckons the former Barcelona boss should’ve been approached instead.
According to the Daily Mail, Eric said: “It is early in the season… too early to tell. Manchester United is a great club and will always be great.
“They will win things, I know they will. But the way they play? Not good. The manager has them playing the wrong way for the fans.
“No fun, no creativity. I like Mourinho. He has a good personality but not for United — they should have [Pep] Guardiola as coach.
“He should be there, but he is doing magic with that other club. The club I cannot name.”
There’s been plenty of debate whether Guardiola would’ve done a better job at Manchester United than Mourinho just as there is debate whether they’ve been equally backed by their respective clubs.
Manchester City have had a reputation for throwing money at their problems and the manager hasn’t been shy of taking advantage of it.
Some fans believe Jose has spent plenty as well, which is true but the figures aren’t close with even newly promoted Fulham outspending United this summer for example.
Nonetheless, the pressure is on for the Portuguese manager to deliver an upturn in results.
