Spain manager Luis Enrique has hinted at David de Gea‘s possible future, insisting he’s one of the best in the world.
There were some concerns the Manchester United star would lose his spot as his country’s first choice goalkeeper.
De Gea was heavily criticised by the Spanish press for the nation’s failures at the World Cup this summer but remains an outstanding shot-stopper.
Nonetheless, Enrique has sought to clear the air a little by praising the former Atletico Madrid man publicly.
David was beaten by club-teammate Marcus Rashford in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England at Wembley.
According to the Evening Standard, Luis said: “I am especially happy about David De Gea’s performance.
“He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, he is proving it in the Premier League week-in, week-out and I never had any doubts.
“Your errors sometimes help you, as you try to improve and grow up and all in all I am really happy with David, he is a top player.”
It’s certainly pleasing for United fans to see Spain’s new manager place his faith in De Gea.
Supporters know exactly what the Spaniard can bring to a team as he singlehandedly saved the club points on multiple occasions last season.
David was expected to have his contract with the Red Devils extended but there has been no official news so far on that front.
With Real Madrid ending their chase of the goalkeeper, it seemed as though he would be rewarded for his loyalty as well as tied down for the foreseeable future.
Fans are hoping the deal can be concluded sooner rather than later so the focus can return to the field.
