Bryan Robson has revealed his surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo did not make a Manchester United return in order to finish his career at the club.
The Portuguese great left Man United in 2009 to join Real Madrid, his dream club as a child. This summer, after nine years at the Santiago Bernabéu where he made history with records, trophies and goals all in huge quantities, he left to join Italian giants Juventus.
It now looks unlikely that Ronaldo, who wore the number 7 just like Robson in Manchester, will return to United at any point in his career given he’s now 33 and has signed a four-year-deal in Turin.
Robson told the Manchester Evening News that he had expected Ronaldo’s career to reach a conclusion at United, or at Real Madrid.
“I was surprised that Ronaldo didn’t finish his career at Real Madrid or Manchester United,” Robson said.
“That was a surprising move when he went to Juventus. Someone like Ronaldo can change your season. It can happen.”
Ronaldo could still make a return to Old Trafford one day, but it looks immensely unlikely.
His spell at United was glorious, and he will go down as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. With 42 goals in one season, he will also go down as one of the greatest goalscorers in the club’s history.
Should he come back to United at this stage, it’s likely that he’d hold the club back and stop a young team from developing.
