Man United make shocking deadline day approach for world-class defender

Manchester United have reportedly approached Atletico Madrid regarding the availability of defender Diego Godin on transfer deadline day.

The summer transfer window slams shut at 5pm this evening and Man United have failed to bring in a new centre-back, which has been a priority for Jose Mourinho ahead of the 2018-19 season.

A barrage of targets have been mentioned over the course of the summer, as there always is when United are involved, and now a surprise name has risen with the deadline quickly approaching.

Sky Sports News report that United are chasing a deal for Atletico leader Godin after failing to reach an agreement for their top targets.

Leicester City centre-half Harry Maguire was thought to be the United board’s first-choice option, whilst Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng appears to be Mourinho’s preferred name.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld and Barcelona outcast Yerry Mina have also been touted as on the club’s radar, but Tottenham’s valuation of Alderweireld has stalled negotiations and Mina seems Everton-bound.

Godin has enjoyed eight successful years at Atletico and is widely considered as one of the best central defenders in world football following consistent performances at both club and country level.

Let’s be honest, a deal for the Uruguayan 32-year-old international is very unlikely at this late stage in the transfer window but anything can happen on deadline day – supposedly.
