Marcos Rojo fears he’ll be frozen out by Jose Mourinho next season as the 55-year-old looks to sign a new central defender before the transfer window closes, according to reports.
The defender has not linked up with the Manchester United squad in Los Angeles due to an unspecified injury presumably sustained over the World Cup.
He enjoyed his best form in a Man United shirt during Mourinho’s first season at the club but a knee ligament injury has prevented him from returning to his best.
And according to the Telegraph‘s Luke Edwards, Rojo fears he’ll be rendered surplus to requirements if Mourinho manages to sign another central defender before the transfer window closes on August 9.
Leicester City’s Harry Maguire is quickly emerging as the club’s top target. The England World Cup star, according to reports, believes he will join up with United this summer, but Mourinho will have to see one of his defenders go the other way before any move can happen.
And Rojo appears to be the obvious candidate. His injury record means Mourinho can no longer rely on him and you sense Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones are all higher in the pecking order at this moment in time.
Finding a new club for Rojo, however, could be difficult. Only 15 days remain until the window shuts – although players can be sold right up until the normal deadline later in August – and United may have a hard time finding a club willing to pay the defender’s wages, which are said to be around £100,000-a-week.
