Manchester United great David Beckham and former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will have more than just a place in the 2018 World Cup Semi-Finals on the line when England and Sweden clash on Saturday afternoon.
The two nations face each other in the quarter-finals at the Samara Arena and the two names that are very familiar amongst Man United supporters have plenty riding on the match.
Ibrahimovic, being Ibrahimovic, posted on Instagram challenging Beckham to a wager where if England were to win he would buy the iconic no. 7 dinner where he wants in the world, but if Sweden were to claim victory he would have to buy the self-proclaimed ‘God of Manchester’ anything he wants from Swedish shop Ikea.
Beckham promptly replied to the call-out, stating that he would buy Ibrahimovic whatever he needs for his “new mansion in LA” if Sweden win, but the 36-year-old striker would have to go to an England game in a shirt and “enjoy fish and chips” at half-time.
Both players have followed similar career paths – representing AC Milan, Paris-Saint Germain, United and LA Galaxy – but all focus in now on the World Cup, Ibrahimovic’s first since retiring from international football in 2016.
It’s fair to say both left their mark at Old Trafford and will be remembered as two of the most charismatic in the club’s long history – now onto Saturday afternoon where we’ll see which star comes out on top.
