Drogba reveals why Mourinho signed Lukaku

Former Chelsea icon Didier Drogba has continued to praise Belgium and Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku, revealing why he believes Jose Mourinho brought the former Everton man in.

The 25 year old has gained plenty of plaudits for his performances for his nation at the World Cup so far, managing to get his name on the scoresheet four times.

Lukaku didn’t score in Belgium’s 3-2 comeback win against Japan but he was instrumental and no one knows his qualities better than Drogba.

The former striker is currently working as a pundit but knows the Belgian personally with many fans comparing similarities between the two.

Mourinho is said to have signed Romelu because he plays just like the former Blues man did but the Ivorian believes there’s more to it than just that.

According to the Sport Review, Didier said to BBC Sport: “For me there was always a difference between being in the dressing room and being around the lads – joking and having fun – and the moment I stepped out on the field.

“I changed, and I think he noticed that when he watched me when he was young. He respected that and I can see he is the same now too. He showed that at Manchester United last season.

“I also know United manager Jose Mourinho well, of course, from our time at Chelsea and I can see why he got the best out of Romelu at Old Trafford.

“I think Jose understood when he signed him for United last year that the boy has become a man. He was mature and ready for a challenge like playing for a club like United.

“Romelu did so well because he has got the confidence of the manager, but also because he is at the age where he knows how to pay that confidence back.”

Belgium face Brazil next in the quarter finals and there’s no doubt they’ll need Lukaku to continue his fine form in order for them to stand a chance to advance further into the competition.

The European nation were labelled the dark horses of the tournament but following exits from Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Spain, they suddenly find themselves as amongst the favourites if they can keep the wins coming.
